River managed to complete a historic purchase. The Millonario agreed with Atlético de Madrid to buy Thiago Almada for approximately 20 million dollars, a transfer that shakes the Argentine transfer market. Almada returns to Argentine football with the backing of his time in Europe and the prestige of having been part of the world champion squad. The contract will be for three and a half years, until the end of 2030.
The former Vélez player stands out for his versatility, as he can play as an attacking midfielder (enganche), winger, or offensive midfielder. It is worth remembering the day Almada chose Boca over River, due to his admiration for Román Riquelme, stating on that occasion that the former Xeneize number 10 was his idol.
Although the midfielder always made it clear that his priority, if he were to return to the country, would be to go back to Vélez, the club that developed him, he also agreed to answer a question that usually sparks the interest of fans of the two biggest teams in the country: which jersey he would choose if he had to decide between Boca and River, they asked him on SportsCenter, on ESPN.
"Between Boca and River, I would choose Boca. I have family who are Boca fans and my idol has always been Riquelme," he confessed, making it clear that his admiration for the current Xeneize president began when he was a child.
The player himself confirmed that there had been contact and that he had conversations with the executive, who was closely following his career and congratulating him on his performances. However, at that time the midfielder's priority was to continue his development abroad.
During the last season, the midfielder played 49 official matches (2,190 total minutes), scored 5 goals and provided three assists (40 of those matches were for Atlético de Madrid, with four goals and two assists). With the albiceleste jersey, he has 21 matches and five goals with the Argentine National Team.

In 2021, Almada played his last season for Vélez, where he featured in 52 official matches and scored 14 goals, establishing himself as one of the team's top figures before being transferred to Atlanta United in MLS.
After his stint in the American league, he moved to Brazilian football. During his time at Botafogo in the second half of 2024, Thiago Almada recorded a total of 26 matches played, three goals, and two assists across all competitions. His period at the Brazilian club was short but highly successful, winning both the Brasileirão and the Copa Libertadores.
