Diego Forlán will take over as coach of the Uruguayan senior national team and the U-20 category, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) reported this Thursday, less than two months after being eliminated in the World Cup group stage under Marcelo Bielsa.

Leader of the generation that returned Uruguay to the football elite, with a fourth-place finish in South Africa 2010, the former forward will manage the friendly matches that a Charrúa team in reconstruction after the failure in North America 2026 will play in September, October, and March.

"Diego Forlán comes home" to be "in charge of the U-20 National Team and the Senior National Team," states the brief message released by the AUF.

The agreement with the former footballer – Golden Ball winner at the 2010 South Africa World Cup – was finalized after weeks of negotiation.

The contract would mark an interim technical leadership of the senior national team, but with the door open to extend the bond, AUF sources told AFP days ago.

Uruguay suffered a severe setback in the World Cup due to unexpected draws against Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), and a 1-0 defeat against champions Spain.

A lackluster Federico Valverde in midfield, a Darwin Núñez without offensive impact, and an erratic Fernando Muslera in goal were part of a gamble by the eccentric Argentine coach that will be remembered as one of the poorest in the World Cup history of the two-time champions (1930 and 1950).

Forlán's election generates both uncertainty and expectations among fans, who idolize the former forward's career but have few references to decipher his coaching profile.

Forlán hung up his boots at 40 in 2019 and debuted as a coach in the 2020 season with the popular Peñarol of Montevideo. Just 11 games later he left the position due to poor results.

His other experience on the bench was in 2021 when he was in charge of Atentas de San Carlos, in the Uruguayan Second Division, for 12 games.
