FIFA crisis: Infantino seeks to stop a rebellion

"The conditions have not been met," UEFA stated in a declaration sent to Sky News, emphasizing that its associations had been clear: first, the proposal for commercialization of competitions had to be withdrawn, and second, there had to be guarantees that "these attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never happen again."

But the harshest point of the statement was another: UEFA ratified that it has lost confidence in the Swiss leader.

"UEFA made it absolutely clear in its statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in the presidency of Gianni Infantino. That position stands," the European body said.

FIFA had tried to close the crisis with a statement after the meeting held in Rabat, in which it assured that the president had the "full support" of the Council members and the Steering Committee.

However, UEFA questioned that message and noted that those who publicly supported Infantino are part of a structure directly linked to the president.

"Yesterday's announcement that some people employed by the FIFA president (and whose careers depend on his favor) agree with him changes nothing," UEFA responded.

Furthermore, according to Sky News, several important FIFA officials were not present at the meeting in Morocco. Among them were Jill Ellis, head of football, Arsène Wenger, head of global development, Sarai Bareman, top authority for women's football, and Kevin Lamour, director of operations.

The conflict casts doubt on the participation of European national teams in upcoming FIFA competitions. The first tournament to be affected could be the Women's U20 World Cup to be held next month in Poland, with England among the participating teams.

The dispute between FIFA and UEFA thus deepens an institutional crisis that had already led to strong criticisms against Infantino, who in recent days also received public criticism from Luis Figo, one of football's figures who had supported him when he became president of the organization in 2016.

The Swiss has managed to avoid, for now, a frontal clash over the economic project, but the rift with Europe remains open and threatens to become the biggest political challenge of his mandate.
