Thiago Tirante shook up the third day of competition at the Canadian Masters 1000 with a resounding victory over Taylor Fritz, world number 8. Mariano Navone also advanced to the third round, while Tomás Etcheverry, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, and Sebastián Báez were unable to celebrate. And Francisco Cerúndolo, the country's number one racket, is already playing.
Tirante, 25 years old and world number 65, caused the upset by defeating Fritz 7-5 and 6-3 in one hour and 28 minutes, matching the best victory of his career, which he achieved at the Bastad ATP in 2024 when he beat Andrey Rublev, who was also ranked eighth at the time. In addition, he has 3 wins in 4 matches against top 10 players after defeating Ben Shelton in Houston and losing to Daniil Medvedev in Rome, both matches played this year.

Meanwhile, Etcheverry, world number 30, suffered a tough loss, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Nuno Borges, ranked 55th, and is still without a win on the hard court swing in preparation for the US Open. Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, meanwhile, could do very little against a dominant and inspired Casper Ruud, who defeated him in just 59 minutes. The Norwegian, world number 14, was unplayable with his first serve (winning 82 percent of points played with his first serve and not conceding any break points) and dictated the terms of the match from the start. In the other matches this Wednesday, Joao Fonseca's victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas stood out. The young Brazilian star, 19 years old and world number 27, won 7-6 (7-3) and 7-5 in one hour and 50 minutes against the Greek, a former world number three, who had to play qualifying to enter the main draw and is still looking to recover his best tennis after a couple of seasons of poor results, especially in the most important events.
